During the onboarding process for your GoDutch account, you may be asked to provide a colour copy of your identification documents. We require a colour copy of your ID without redactions for several important reasons related to security, compliance, and legal obligations listed below.

Providing a valid copy of your ID

When asked to provide a copy of your ID, you can upload either a valid passport or European identity card. Please note that we need a ‘clean’ unaltered copy of your ID, meaning that you:

  • Cannot write or alter anything on the ID

  • Cannot redact any details, including BSN (more information below)

  • Cannot apply any watermarks to the copy

After producing a valid copy of your ID, it can be submitted to the document upload portal that is available in the web app.

Why is it necessary?

Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing Act (Wwft), financial institutions are required to verify your identity in the process of onboarding. Therefore, we are required to ask for your ID, either a passport or European identity card. This cannot be redacted or altered in any way. Your Citizen Service Number (BSN) must also be visible, as it is necessary under the General Tax Act and the European Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

A colour copy is also necessary as it allows verifying whether the ID is genuine. Many identity documents contain security features (such as holograms, watermarks, or microprinting) that are easier to check in colour. Moreover, redactions might obscure these features, making it difficult for to confirm that the document is not forged.
