Accepting payments with payment links

Let clients pay your invoices by iDEAL/Wero or card, and see exactly when the money reaches your account.

Written by Laurens

With payment links, your clients can pay your invoices and payment requests by iDEAL/Wero or card, straight from the email they receive. Without payment links, clients can only pay you by bank transfer.

How do payment links work?

Every payment link opens a payment page where your client chooses how to pay: iDEAL/Wero, card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express) or a regular bank transfer. You decide which of these options your client sees.

iDEAL/Wero and card payments are processed by our payment partner Adyen, a licensed payment provider. That's why you activate payment links once, through a short verification with Adyen. 👉 Read how to activate payment links.

Sending a payment link

  1. Go to Send invoices in the left-hand menu and click Create new.

  2. Choose a contact and select Request money without an invoice. This takes about 30 seconds and is handy when you don't need a formal invoice.

  3. Enter the Amount and, if you like, a Note, for example what the payment is for.

  4. Under Payment methods, choose which options your client can use. Switch off any method you don't want to offer. The preview on the right shows exactly what your client will see.

  5. Click Continue and check the details.

  6. Enter your client's email address and click Send. Prefer to share the link yourself, for example via WhatsApp? Click Create only and copy the link.

You then see the link and can copy it straight away. The payment request appears in your overview under Send invoices, with the type Payment link.

Want to send a full invoice instead? Choose Create a one-off invoice in step 2. Invoices include a payment link too. 👉 Read how to send an invoice for all the steps.

What does it cost?

You only pay when your client pays through iDEAL/Wero or card. The fees are:

  • Manual bank transfer (SEPA): free

  • iDEAL/Wero: €0.25 per payment, regardless of the amount

  • Visa and Mastercard: 2.9% + €0.25 per payment

  • American Express: 3.9% + €0.25 per payment

The fee is deducted from your payout once the money comes in. Your client pays the amount you requested, nothing more. You can always check the fees by hovering over the ⓘ icon next to a payment method.

💡 Only want to pay the lowest fees? Switch off card payments for that payment link. Keep in mind that for clients abroad, a card is often the easiest way to pay you.

Following up on a payment link

Click a payment link in your overview to see its status and history. From there you can:

  • Copy link: share it again yourself.

  • Send reminder: we email your client a reminder.

  • Mark as paid: for example when your client paid you another way. You'll find this under More.

  • Cancel: the link can then no longer be used. Also under More.

When will I receive the money?

Not straight away. iDEAL/Wero and card payments first arrive on your balance with Adyen. Every night, everything that has been on that balance for at least two days (48 hours) is paid out to your GoDutch account, minus the fees.

So if your client pays on Monday, you can usually expect the money in your GoDutch account on Wednesday or Thursday. Payments by regular bank transfer go straight to your GoDutch account, usually within 1 to 2 working days.

💡 Your client may tell you they've already paid while the money isn't in your account yet. That's normal. Check the payment status: it shows whether the payment has been received and when you can expect it.

What do the payment statuses mean?

  • Pending: your client hasn't paid yet.

  • Paid: your client has paid, but the money isn't in your GoDutch account yet. You can see the expected payout date.

  • Settled: the money is in your GoDutch account.

  • Expired: the payment link is no longer valid. Send a new one if needed.

  • Chargeback: your client has reversed the payment through their bank or card provider.

How do I recognise payouts in my transactions?

Payouts from Adyen arrive as one transaction per day. That single amount can contain several payments from different clients. Click the transaction in your overview to see exactly which invoices and payment links were paid, the total amount collected, the fees deducted and the net amount you received. This makes reconciling your bookkeeping easy.

What if a client reverses a payment?

Clients can dispute a payment afterwards, for example through a card chargeback. If that happens, the amount is taken back and the payment shows the status Chargeback. Keep your invoices and any agreements with your client, so you can show the payment was justified.
